Hungary is entering a new era of digital public service, as Pro-M Zrt. and Ericsson embark on a joint initiative to transition the country’s Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) communication network to 5G technology. The project’s mission is to harness the power of next-generation mobile connectivity to support emergency responders — including ambulance, police, and disaster management services — with faster, more reliable, and more intelligent communications.
The existing 4G-based PPDR network, operated by Pro-M, already plays a critical role in Hungary’s emergency communications. With nationwide coverage and dedicated security functions, it provides a trusted backbone for life-saving operations. However, the transition to 5G — scheduled for completion by the end of 2025 — will introduce entirely new capabilities: ultra-low latency, increased bandwidth, and network slicing, enabling agencies such as ambulance, fire, and police services to receive priority access to network resources.
With 5G, first responders will be able to share real-time, high-definition video streams, transmit critical data instantly, and connect remotely with specialist teams, such as doctors providing live on-site guidance. Reliable, high-speed data exchange is essential during mass events, major accidents, or natural disasters, where every second counts.
Built-in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities will elevate public safety communications to a new level. Predictive analytics will support early detection of potential emergencies, while automated decision-support systems will enhance the speed and effectiveness of response operations. Data-driven insights will not only protect lives today but also strengthen future resilience and preparedness.

The collaboration between Pro-M and Ericsson exemplifies how technological innovation and public service commitment can align to create solutions that have a lasting impact on societal safety and national resilience. Beyond enhancing security for Hungarian citizens, the initiative could also serve as a model for other countries, demonstrating how 5G technology can be effectively applied to mission-critical public service communications.
Pro-M’s mission is to elevate public service communications to a new standard of excellence. Supported by Ericsson’s global experience and technological leadership, this partnership marks a defining milestone in the evolution of Hungary’s digital public safety infrastructure — with benefits that will extend well into the future.
